PCI Compliance Weak Ciper IIS IIS6 Windows 2003 Plesk

Registry entries for disabling weak SSL cipers in IIS6 on Windows 2003

Registry entries for disabling weak SSL cipers in IIS6 on Windows 2003

After a recent PCI compliance scan on a customers website, one of the ‘Alerts’ listed as a high severity was:

‘Detected targeted service accepts connections for cryptographically weak SSL methods (e.g. SSLv2). Such methods are known to have cryptographic weaknesses as well as other exploitable vulnerabilities’

To get around this I went to:

HKLMSYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Ciphers\

\RC4 64/128 Subkey:RC4 64/128
\RC4 56/128 Subkey:RC4 56/128
\RC2 56/128 Subkey:RC2 56/128
\RC2 56/56 Subkey:RC2 56/56
\RC4 40/128 Subkey:RC4 40/128
\RC2 40/128 Subkey:RC2 40/128

And to “disable” these weaker cipers we add a DWORD of “ENABLED”=0

Sightseers and worker hurt in terrifying lift plunge at Tower Bridge!

Five sightseers and a worker were hurt in a terrifying lift plunge at Tower Bridge yesterday.

Another 10 people were trapped when the elevator “suddenly dropped” seconds after beginning the 140ft ascent of the north tower.

Those taken to hospital included a 37-yearold man with a suspected broken leg and woman of 55 with ankle injuries.

The lift, which was less than half full, crashed 10ft to ground level while on its way up to the Tower Bridge Exhibition. There were unconfirmed reports a cable had snapped.

The bridge was sealed off for several hours - causing traffic chaos in the area.

tower-bridge-picOwner the City of London Corporation said: “The incident happened after the lift suddenly dropped.” Afterwards the broken elevator could be seen hanging with its doors open inside the glassfronted entrance to the Tower Bridge visitor centre at the foot of the north tower. Police, several fire brigade units, three ambulance crews, and a hazardous area response team were sent to the scene.

Firefighters used specialist hydraulic equipment to stabilise the lift before paramedics were able to reach the injured.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Six adult patients - two women and four men - were assessed and treated by our crews.

“They had all sustained lower leg injuries, but were fully conscious and were taken to the Royal London Hospital.” Philip Everett, the City of London Corporation’s director of environmental services, said: “We clearly very much regret this incident and we wish the injured well.” He said some of those hurt were tourists and included visitors from Spain.

Mr Everett added: “The Health and Safety Executive are currently conducting an investigation which we are fully co-operating with. We have our own lift service engineers on the site. We’re looking into all aspects of what might have gone wrong.

“Any incident involving a lift is very concerning. We are very concerned about it. We’re taking all the right precautions, including keeping the exhibition closed.

“It will remain shut until we have checked the serviceability of the other lift on the site.” Mr Everett said there had been no previous problems with the elevator which carries 1,000 people a day.

Tower Bridge, which is crossed by 40,000 motorists and pedestrians every day, took eight years to build and was completed in 1894.

The lifts were added to take tourists to its high-level walkways 140ft above the River Thames.

In its day, the bridge was an ultramodern piece of steam-powered engineering clad in gothic stone with an iron skin to blend with the neighbouring Tower of London.

It is currently undergoing major restoration work on its stone and paint.

The bridge opened as an award-winning museum and visitor attraction in 1982 but remains one of busiest road traffic bridges in London and opens several times a week for passing shipping.

Visitors ascend by lifts and stairs in one tower, cross the walkways at the summit, and descend through the tower on the opposite side.

Stop using your own bandwidth, servers, time, and money marketing our songwriters for free!

The row between YouTube and the Performing Rights Society - which collects royalties for musicians - shows no sign of ending, although talks yesterday were described as positive.

PRS said yesterday: “The meeting was positive. We are committed to ensuring our 60,000 songwriter and composers members receive a fair deal and that UK consumers continue to enjoy music videos on YouTube.”

The group expressed outrage when Google pulled the plug on UK access to most YouTube videos on Monday. It said it was “shocked and disappointed” at Google’s hardball negotiating stance.

For its part YouTube said its existing licence with the PRS had ended and the society was asking it to pay “many, many times more for our licence than before… we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback.”

Apart from the money, the two sides are also arguing over access to data. It appears that Google is asking for a full list of PRS members so that it can work out how much it owes the society. But the PRS is asking Google for viewing figures so that it can do the maths and work out how much its members are owed.

A spokesman for the PRS said the row was about reporting and data as well as what rates should be paid. The two sides should meet again in the next few days.

Robbery police target footballer

Premier League striker Victor Anichebe was challenged by police looking for a gang of robbers, as he looked in a jeweller’s window with a friend.

The innocent Everton player, who was wearing a leg cast after surgery, is now demanding an apology.

Cheshire police said they acted because there had been a series of violent robberies in the area.

During a “heated dialogue” between the two men and officers in Knutsford, Anichebe’s friend was handcuffed.

Everton FC spokesman Ian Ross said: “Victor was deeply upset and very distressed by the incident.

“I believe he is still waiting for a full and unreserved apology from the police involved.

“Once he has received that both the club and the player will consider the matter closed.”

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “For some time Cheshire Constabulary have been responding to a series of violent robberies targeting jewellers in Knutsford and in the wider Cheshire area.

“We have robust plans in place to respond swiftly to any report of any suspicious activity at or in the vicinity of jewellers’ premises.

“As part of that plan, local CCTV operators identified what appeared to be two men acting suspiciously outside a jeweller’s store on King Street.

“Police attended the location within minutes and upon speaking with the two men, a heated dialogue developed in an attempt to ascertain exactly what the two persons were doing outside the jeweller’s premises.

“During the course of this exchange, an officer took the decision to restrain one of the two men concerned by applying handcuffs.

“It was subsequently ascertained that there was no criminal conduct whatsoever on behalf of the two men concerned and they were in no way involved in any criminal activity.”

Installed Fedora (FC8) and puzzled to how to get it to see more than 3GB Ram? I was!

Well, just finished building a MySQL server for one of my customers, reasonable spec, Dell PowerEdge Server, 6GB Ram, 2 Intel Xeons, Fast Disks, should do the job great!  Well, it would if it could see more than 3GB Ram!

After much googleing… and getting nowhere - here’s what i found:

Install the PAE version of the Kernel:

“yum install kernel-PAE”

Cool. Now get Fedora to actually use that kernel on the next rebbot:

“vi /etc/grub.conf”

Look for the line “default=1″ Then change that to the corresponding kernel image you wanna load.  Im my case it was title Fedora (2.6.24.3-34.fc8PAE), it was the first in the list, so I changed the default to:

“default=0″

:wq!

Then a quick “shutdown -r now”

when its back up you can do a quick “cat /etc/meminfo” to see how much ram the os can now see and use.

On this server i was using Fedora Core 8 (FC8) and think this aplies to most newer linux distro’s.  If you find that there isn’t a “kernel-pae” package to install try “kernel-smp”, woked on one of my older Fedora Core 4 servers i just chucked some more ram into. Good luck!

How to Downgrade Windows XP Professional to Windows XP Home!

Well, all us geeks have been there and done that FCKGW XP Pro Key thing, and then had to change our mobile number when the XP service pack came out.

After many years of seeking a solution, Ive finally found one that works!!!

OK, so you’ve got a mates/customers computer, its got an XP home COA stuck on it’s side, cool, you can dig out your XP home OEM CD and get on with doing a repair install - the fixer of all XP wierdness… well thats the theory.

So you boot of your CD, hit enter, the chose “Repair” to to an inplace upgrade, keeping all their settings ‘n stuff.  WHAT! Waddya mean it doesnt detect the install?  WTF?  oh bugger, its got XP Pro on it… and you can’t “downgrade” XP Pro to XP Home.  What now? another Dodgy Key?  Some other Bios Crack to fudge it?  Why? Its got a Legit Sticker on the Side.  Well you could back up their 1.7 terrabyte of porn wares and mp3’s and do a clean install… feck that!  you need XP Mode Switch from filewalker.de!

This cool utility allows you so fool XP into thinking its whatever version you like!  So boot back up into XP Pro, Run modeswitch, select XP home, and reboot.  Then Shutdown Windows, boot again from your XP Home OEM CD and this time when you go to do a repair install you can see the installation in the list - away you go!  XP repaired and subsequently downgraded to XP Home, using the legit key on the side of the PC!

Welcome to my random thoughs and discoveries, spilled here for your plundering!

Well, my first post, and one of the most useful time saving hacks that I have **EVER** found.  As you will get to know, I run a small computer repair shop in Chorley Lancashire in the UK.  Many many times per week we get customers bringing in their PC’s to be “fixed” the main problem always being the there just rammed with spyware, malware, virus’s and other windows killing faults.  Cool, just drag out Spybot, AVG, a good dose of MSConfig and away we go!  Well most of the time.  Then there are the ones that wont boot any more, same old fixes apply, infact you could get a monkey to fix half of the PC’s, Follow these simple steps, Chkdsk, Boot from AVG Rescue CD and do a full scan, Repair Install of Windows, once in Windows run Spybot, Clean AVG Install, Remove anything that didnt ship from Microsoft from starting up using Msconfig, then your’e done - 99% of faults cured!  Well - its not qute as simple as that as you will see as you browse round this site - the first problem i’m going to ramble/waffle about is what to do when the customers friends, mothers, uncles, cousins mate had a go at repairing it a while back and installed XP Pro with the world famous FCKGW cd Key!
